Acquisition From ipArchive Offers New Solution for Monitoring and Managing Bandwidth Demands on Corporate and ISP Networks

LOS GATOS, California — July 8, 2002 — Audible Magic Corporation (, a leading provider of content management and information services for the media and entertainment industries, announced today it has acquired a network monitoring technology that identifies peer-to-peer applications, applications users, and specific files exchanged. Developed by former internet-startup ipArchive, it offers top down and detail views to IT administrators and ISPs for monitoring and managing bandwidth demands generated by peer-to-peer application traffic.

With the ability to identify users of P2P applications, the ipArchive technology offers IT administrators the option to manage bandwidth on an individual basis. Information gathered through monitoring activities can be sent to standard bandwidth shaping and firewall systems for appropriate action based on each company’s unique business policies.

“The ipArchive technology has a broad range of potential markets, including corporate or academic intranets, ISPs, and network appliance vendors,” said Vance Ikezoye, CEO and founder of Audible Magic. “It provides details about the applications that put the heaviest demand on network bandwidth.”

“Also included in the intellectual assets acquired from ipArchive, portions of which are covered by pending patents, is technology for initiating action dependent on identifying the contents of a specific file, such as the title and artist of an MP3 file.

“These assets provide considerable potential for solutions that go beyond our present market for passive monitoring,” Ikezoye continued. “We will be investigating these, as they offer the prospect of providing IT administrators with valuable tools that can be used to address copyright and intellectual property issues.”

Under development, the new technology will be integrated into a beta-stage service by July, and commercially available in Q3.
